Greetings, fellow purr-fectionists! Yoru here, reporting for duty at Yoru Says. I've been observing you humans, and frankly, I'm a little concerned. You seem to underestimate us felines. We're not just fluff and cuddles, you know?! We have brilliant minds; some of us consider ourselves geniuses! So, it's my mission to help you unlock our potential.

Let's Bust Some Myths: We Cats Are so intelligent we are Brainiacs!

You think we're aloof? We're just contemplating the universe while you're busy scrolling on your glowing rectangles. Recent "scientific" studies (finally catching up to what I already knew) prove we're way smarter than you give us credit for.

WHY ARE CATS INTELLIGENT

1. We're Learning Machines:

  • Apparently, we learn faster than your human toddlers. Shocking, right? We can connect words and pictures in a flash!
  • Dr. Saho Takagi found out we link sounds and pictures in our heads. (Duh.)
  • Source: Takagi, S., Arahori, M., & Saito, A. (2022). Cats associate more with words compared to human babies. Scientific reports, 12(1), 1-8.

2. We're Communication Experts

  • We understand your babbling better than you think. And our purrs? They're like a secret language. (We even understand our names and the names of our housemates!)
  • Source: Saito, A., Shinozuka, K., Ito, Y., & Hasegawa, T. (2019). Vocal recognition of owners by domestic cats (Felis catus). Animal cognition, 22(5), 683-695.

3. We Have Deep Thoughts:

  • We have excellent memory and understand that things exist even when we can't see them. (It's called "object permanence," humans. Look it up.)
  • Source: Ramos, D., & Mills, D. (2023). Object permanence in domestic cats (Felis catus) using violation-of-expectancy by owner and stranger. bioRxiv, 2023-08.

A woman takes notes with her cat

"There's this perception of cats being untrainable or maybe hard to work with. Cats display a lot of individual variation and have distinct personalities, which makes it hard for researchers to understand them."

Kristyn Vitale Shreve, cat cognition and behavior research fellow at Oregon State University

Is Your Cat a Super-Genius? Let's Find Out!

  1. Puzzle Pro: Do I solve puzzles or open doors when you think I can't? (Obviously, yes.)
  2. Memory Marvel: Do I remember where my favorite napping spots are or recognize you after a trip? (I remember everything.)
  3. Trick Talent: Can I learn tricks with a little patience (and maybe some treats)? (I can learn anything.I just don't want to.)
  4. Communication Whiz: Do I use a variety of meows and body language to tell you what I want? (I'm a master communicator.)
  5. Curiosity Champion: Am I always exploring and playing? (Duh, I'm a cat!)

If you answered "yes" to most of these, congratulations! You have a brilliant feline on your hands (or lap).

You can always come back to the first video in this blog and test like a researcher would your cat's intelligence (if he or she decides to cooperate, of course!).

But I'm leaving here this other video where a cat lover tested many viral challenges about a cat's intelligence. You can work on all of these tests if you have the basic requirements for every cat study: love, toys, and treats!

Can you develop your cat's intelligence? yes!!!

  1. Play with Us! Did you know cat behaviorists recommend at least 15 min of exclusive play with us? I agree, though I ask for fifteen minutes every four hours. Interactive toys are like mental workouts; I need them to boost my intelligence. Check out the toys my human colleagues picked out!
  2. Give Us Puzzles! Puzzle feeders make mealtime fun and challenging. (My human colleagues have some good ones.)
  3. Keep Us Estimulated! A stimulating environment is key to a happy, intelligent cat. How do you estimate us? Like you would do with a baby: talk to us! Look into our eyes, blink softly, and talk with a soft voice. Ask us questions. Show us things. We will wire our brains with it all.
